Announcing the 2014-2015 CBL Community Engagement Awardees!

This year two students were selected to receive the 2014-2015 CBL Community Engagement Award! Congratulations to Ian Redding and Delany Larimore! Read more about their community-based learning experience taking HST 240 Oregon History with Professor Charlie Presti and SOC 205 Social Change in Societies with Professor Lisa George.

1. Xerces Society: Data Entry/Membership Volunteer

The Data Entry/Membership Volunteer will support the membership team of the Xerces Society. The team is currently undertaking a membership survey, by mail and online, of the 8,000 members of the Xerces Society. Under the supervision of the Membership Director, the Data Entry Volunteer will enter the results of paper surveys into our online system, and will assist in responding to inquiries and sending follow-up mailings to members. There will be potential to help out with other membership projects, if interested. This volunteer position is perfect for someone considering a career in nonprofit fundraising.

2. Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District: Big Truck Day on Saturday, August 8th

At this annual family event, held on Saturday, August 8th, the Conestoga parking lot is filled with big rigs — bulldozers, fire engines, freight trucks, cranes, buses, tow trucks and more.

Volunteers will assist with checking in patrons, manning booths with Big Truck Day drivers, passing out goodie bags, answering general questions, watching exits and entrances, and helping with the set-up and clean-up of the event. Volunteers must be comfortable with loud noises during the event; must be able to walk and stand during the event; and must be able to carry supplies. Volunteers will work a 4 hour shift of either 8am-12pm or 11am-3pm.

3. Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District: Twilight Track and Field

Enjoy a gorgeous summer evening helping out with our community track & field meets. Volunteers will help register patrons, time races, measure distances, and organize groups of racers.

4. AmeriCorps VISTA: Serve to Eliminate Hunger

Join us as we serve to eliminate hunger with the Oregon Food Bank. Serve alongside VISTA alumni and former CEO of the Oregon Food Bank, Rachel Bristol, and Paul Monteiro, National AmeriCorps VISTA Director and former White House aid.

5. Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District: Get Your Nature Play on While Volunteering!

We are looking for volunteers to survey patron use of these nature play areas, which will help the district better understand how nature play areas are being used by the public. Surveys can be performed at any time of day, year-round. Participants are expected to volunteer a at least 1 hour each week for a minimum of 3 months.

6. The Wetlands Conservancy: 8/15/15 10am-1pm Wetlands Trail Clearing Event! Free Coffee/Pastries!

invasive plants have begun taking over the Apache Bluff nature trail! We need your help to clear it out again! Join us on August 15th, 10am-1pm for an exciting morning of removing invasive species, picking up litter, and beautifying this important site! Come dressed for the weather. We will provide tools and snacks! Everyone is welcome! Carpooling available. Detailed directions will be sent out with RSVP confirmation.

7. Columbia School of English: Volunteers needed for activities with our ESL students

Columbia School of English is recruiting volunteers to assist our ESL students with their conversation skills by joining us for on and off-campus activities. Our students are actively learning English and are in need of individuals who can take the time to visit and converse with them for optimal English learning. As a volunteer, you would spend one or two lunch hours each week at the school speaking English with our students about various topics. We are also expanding our off-campus activities for our students, which would include weekend opportunities.

We are located at 9237 SE Powell Blvd. All volunteers must pass a criminal background check. Please email letter of interest and relevant experience to Kamren, International Student Advisor, at kamrenk@cs.edu.
