Create Plenty: Volunteers Needed for Zero Waste Cafe
Posted by hannah.cherry
Zero Waste Cafe Volunteer
The Cafe program is intended to provide an opportunity for youth to learn entrepreneurial and vocational skills through a sustainability lens, as well as serve as a community building workspace for NE Portland residents. It is a vibrant partnership between Leaven, Trash for Peace, and Create Plenty–all local 501c3 non-profit organizations.
The cafe will initially be held one time per week on Thursdays, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. to coincide with the SWAP (Swap, Work And Play) hours in the Leaven Community Commons. From 8 a.m.-9 a.m., bilingual yoga will be held in the sanctuary as well.

About the Organization
The Cafe program is intended to provide an opportunity for youth to learn entrepreneurial and vocational skills through a sustainability lens, as well as serve as a community building workspace for NE Portland residents. It is a vibrant partnership between Leaven, Trash for Peace, and Create Plenty–all local 501c3 non-profit organizations.
Interested high school age youth (initially from low-income/section 8 housing properties and local High Schools) will participate in a training that includes barista/coffee making skills and food handling. This will include the receipt of a Food Handler’s Permit and coffee master certificate upon completion of a training and 4-6 weeks experience working the cafe.
The cafe will initially be held one time per week from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. to coincide with the SWAP (Swap, Work And Play) hours in the Leaven Community Commons. From 8 a.m.-9 a.m., bilingual yoga will be held in the sanctuary as well. The cafe will be an experiment through the month of July beginning on Thursday, July 16th. An initial training will be held on Monday, July 7th. The youth may sign up to work in pairs for two-hour shifts. The idea is to combine students from Home Forward (section 8 housing associated with Trash for Peace programming) with students from Grant High School’s Green team (Create Plenty programming).
The cafe will be ZERO WASTE. All drinks and food will be served on durable/reusable ware, with no paper cups or plates. All food/coffee grounds will be composted, and all other beverages will be able to be recycled (no plastic). The hope is that the energy used to power the machines eventually be directly generated by renewable energy (solar). All sales will be suggested donation.
The space will be utilized for community development; economic empowerment, yoga, Spanish/English classes and conversation, daycare, etc. Additionally, the hope is that through this experience youth will learn job skills, marketing and other business skills, and hopefully solidify more job opportunities by hosting and creating a cafe rooted in sustainability.
