Ahoy thar, matey! It’s time to celebrate at Aquifer Adventure! Join our volunteer crew for a swashbuckling adventure on the high sloughs, as the Portland Water Bureau and Columbia Slough Watershed Council team up to present a FREE, family-friendly event full of educational games, canoe rides, crafts and more! This is a big event for the Bureau and the Council – we’ve had over 800 pirates-in-training attend in past years – and we need your help to make this a huge success. So come volunteer! This is a great volunteer opportunity for groups and individuals age 14 and up!

Aquifer Adventure 2015 – a free family event all about groundwater!
Saturday, September 12th, 2015 | Event open to the public 12-4pm
NE 166th Ave and Airport Way, Portland, OR 97230

Volunteers are needed for the following shifts:
Shift 1: 8:00 AM – 11:00 AM (Set Up)
Shift 2: 11:30 AM – 4:00 PM (Event Shift)
Shift 3: 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM (Clean up)

2. Columbia Slough Watershed Council: Environmental Education volunteers needed!

Slough School education volunteers assist with stewardship projects (native plantings, mulching, invasive species removal), water quality investigations, and natural history tours for students in the Slough School program. Volunteers first take on a shadowing role observing a staff educator and assisting with behavior monitoring and group management. Once volunteers establish familiarity with the flow of programming, they have the opportunity to lead activities and experiment with teaching/communication styles.

Your commitment: The Council requests weekly volunteering during the Fall season (October – December). Volunteers will have the opportunity to select a consistent weekday to meet this requirement. Volunteers will have the option of continuing on into the Winter season (January – March).

Orientation: All new volunteers must attend an orientation on Saturday, October 3rd from 9:00am – 12:00pm.

3. Neighborhood House-Cesar Chavez K-8: Volunteers needed in after school program and food pantry

Cesar Chavez SUN After School Program: The fall term will begin September 21 to November 25th. From Monday to Thursday from 2:15-5:15pm Cesar Chavez provides academic and enrichment classes to children grades 1st-8th. All children need positive role models and a good soul to push them on the right path whether it’s reading out loud or playing outside. This someone could be you!

Cesar Chavez Food Pantry: Every Wednesday from 5-6:30 PM (excluding holidays) is an Oregon Food Bank sponsored food pantry At the Pantry, anyone can come and get a variety of foods. While it is in this window of time that most people interact with the Pantry, there is a lot of work behind the scenes that make the Pantry possible. We hope that you will take up the call and volunteer at Cesar Chavez. Even an hour a week makes a difference.

4. Hollywood Senior Center: Join us for a Fun Filled Volunteer Recognition Event

On Wednesday, Sept. 16th we will be honoring our volunteers with an event that includes a fun activity, lunch and music. The festivities start at 11:30 with a fun “visit to a foreign land”, then a lunch followed by world music. The event will be at the Center and should end at 1:30. We need people to help set up, serve and clean up on that day.

We are located at 1820 NE 40th Ave, in the Hollywood District. We are close to the Max Station and any bus that travels on NE Sandy. There is on-street parking.

5. Sexual Assault Resource Center (SARC): Prevention Education Volunteer

The purpose of the Prevention Education Program is to empower students to help prevent sexual violence through addressing root causes, attitudes, beliefs and knowledge of sexual violence. We provide a 9-session curriculum that addresses topics of oppression, gender stereotypes, victim empathy, media messaging and pornography, healthy sexual relationships and bystander intervention in middle and high school health classrooms. This volunteer opportunity puts you in the classroom as the sole presenter.

SARC is seeking highly dedicated volunteers with an interest in preventing sexual violence. Volunteers in the Prevention Education Program will gain the following knowledge and skills:

  • How to utilize a trauma-informed approach to discuss sexual violence with youth
  • Teaching tools for classroom management, engagement, and organization
  • Presentation and teaching skills with youth
  • Feedback on presentation skills

See full post for volunteer requirements and training topics. This volunteer opportunity is open to all interested and with the appropriate daytime availability. Men are encouraged to apply as men engaging boys and men in the movement to end violence against women is necessary and impactful.
