I. Join the work party to plant native trees and shrubs in one of NE Portland’s “hidden gems”: the Columbia Children’s Arboretum!

Join Friends of Trees as we restore a part of the Columbia Children’s Arboretum! Volunteers will join a phenomenal crew of community members to repair and preserve this serene piece of land in NE Portland.

When: Saturday, Jan 30th, 9am-1pm
Where: Columbia Children’s Arboretum; 10040 NE 6th Dr Portland, OR 97211

II. Start your February off Right – Join Friends of Trees to restore and preserve the Sandy River Delta!

Friends of Trees is partnering with the Sandy River Basin Watershed Council and Friends of the Sandy River Delta to plant native seedlings at the Sandy River Delta.

When: Saturday, February 6th, 9am-1pm (please arrive by 8:45 to check in)
Where: Sandy River Delta Park, Troutdale, OR

3. Growing Gardens

I. Garden Mentor 2016

Do you love vegetable gardening? Would you like to give advice to a beginning gardener who is just learning to grow their own food? Garden Mentors work one-on-one with a home gardener, providing support and guidance with garden care, planning, planting, problem-solving, maintenance, composting, and winterization. We are looking for both English and Spanish speaking volunteers. Schedule flexible. July & August: 5+ hours total.

II. Seed Delivery Assistants – February 2016

We need YOUR support delivering 8-10 packets of seeds to gardeners in your neighborhood. This volunteering opportunity can be treated as an errand! Each year Growing Gardens distributes over a 1000 packets of seeds to participants in our Home Gardens Program. We need volunteers to deliver seeds to N, NE and SE, Portland (including east Multnomah county) by car, bike, bus, foot or your favorite mode of transportation.

How it works: The home gardens team will assemble zip-lock bags of seeds for delivery. Each gardener will receive a zip-lock with 10-15 packets of seeds. Each zip-lock has an address on it. We will provide you with a map of the addresses. You get to deliver the seeds to about 10 home gardeners, by dropping the zip lock on their porch. The seeds will be carefully planted by home gardeners. The plants will be tended with care and the food will be eaten off the vines and made into healthy delicious meals for families in need.

III. Table and receive a FREE Garden event ticket!

Volunteers will receive a free ticket to a Home and Garden show when signing up for a three hour tabling shift. As a Growing Gardens volunteer you speak with attendees about our nonprofit services and during breaks you can check out the amazing show displays! Message cristy@growing-gardens.org to sign up.

4. Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District: Graphic Arts Intern Needed

Do you have skills in graphic design, and an interest in learning more? THPRD is in need of an enthusiastic graphic design intern to help our publications specialist with daily tasks and special projects. Some of the projects you will help with include:

  • Create, print and finish vinyl banners for THPRD events
  • Create posters, fliers and other publications as needed
  • Create and mount signage for various centers and events

Intern must have a strong interest in the graphic arts field and at least some knowledge and skill in the Adobe Creative Suite software (Adobe In-Design, Photoshop, & Illustrator). Minimum age requirement of 17 years old.

5. Sunshine Division: Do You Love Running? Sunshine Division Needs Volunteers for Some Fun Runs!

Want a fun way to get community service hours for class? Sunshine Division, a local food pantry and clothing closet in N Portland, is working with Worst Day of the Year and Terrapin Events to put on a few fun runs and rides. We need volunteers to help with various tasks to make these runs go smoothly.

We need costume contest judges for Worst Day of the Year Run on Feb. 6th at Edgefield and Worst Day of the Year Ride on Feb. 14th at Lucky Lab in SE Portland from 9-12pm.

We need volunteers to help with My Muddy Valentine, a muddy run at Lee Farms in Tualatin, on Saturday Feb. 13th from 7am-3pm. We need people to help with setup, water table, food, registration, and clothing check in the morning shifts.

6. Mercy Corps Northwest: AmeriCorps VISTA Team Seeks Advisory Committee Members

We’re currently looking for low-income community members interested in helping support our efforts to end poverty by joining our advisory committee. Our advisory committee helps guide and support our mission by providing valuable feedback on our programming and connecting us and our members with community resources.

At this time we are recruiting only advisory committee members who come from low-income communities.

What does the Mercy Corps NW VISTA Advisory Team Do?

  • Offer feedback on programming plans/site selection
  • Offer opportunities for outreach and partnerships with the organizations they represent
  • Occasionally serve as representatives in the community for the program
  • Meet twice a year in Portland (Skype or phone attendance is fine)
  • Time commitment of 4-8 hours per year
