Campus Compact of Oregon: Summer VISTA Opportunity

Campus Compact of Oregon is looking for more than 55 dedicated and talented individuals to serve with Multnomah County youth this summer.

Our AmeriCorps team will act as mentors, recruiters, educators, and support for 15 partner sites across the county working towards alleviating summer learning loss for students.

What is AmeriCorps VISTA?

AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) is the national service program designed specifically to fight poverty. VISTA members serve with community organizations to create and expand programs that build capacity and ultimately bring low-income individuals and communities out of poverty.

What will Summer VISTA Members do?

Each VISTA will serve full time from June 17th — August 11th with either a community organization or school district to prepare students for transitioning into the next grade. VISTAs work full-time for 8 weeks. Specific member assignments will also vary and might include:

• Generating resources, materials, supplies, and space for project activities\
• Serving directly with students as tutors or assistant teachers
• Helping with outreach to parents or guardians of students
• Recruiting, training, and coordinating community-based volunteers
• Developing lesson plans and activities for students
• Involving businesses and community organizations in project activities
• Developing materials for year-round project activities
• Conducting community education, outreach, and awareness

As a Summer VISTA your contributions will have a significant impact on the organization you serve with. You’ll receive two days of training before beginning at your site (June 15/16) to prepare you to be successful with these assignments.

What are the benefits of service?

Members are eligible to receive:

• A Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $1,212.22 or a $250 cash stipend upon completion of service
• Bus passes for the summer
• On-site orientation and training throughout the summer
• A living allowance of approximately $480 paid every two weeks ($1980 pre tax) to cover necessities during service

Where will Members serve?

Members will serve in school districts or community organizations in the Portland-area. Campus Compact of Oregon is working with the Ninth Grade Counts program to identify established and high-quality programs at which to place Members, as well as identify culturally specific and need based programs.

Boys and Girls Club, Urban League of Portland, Native American Youth and Family Center (NAYA), Latino Network, Friends of the Children, Impact NW: Urban Opportunities and AKA Science, El Programa Hispano Catolico/PUENTES, The Portland Leadership Foundation: Champions Academy, Girls Inc. PNW, Elevate Oregon, From the Ground Up, Reynolds High School, Centennial High School, David Douglas High School, Campus Compact of Oregon.

Who should apply to be a Member?

We are looking for Members who would make great role models for students. Experience working with youth is a definite plus! In addition, Members must be:

• At least 18 years of age,
• US Citizens, US Nationals, or Lawful Permanent Residents,
• Able to commit to serve full-time for the full term (Typically 40 hours a week)
• Not be listed in the National Sex Offenders Public Registry,
• Able to pass a criminal background check per site request.

Is this a job?

As national service participants Members will be volunteers, not employees. While serving Members are not allowed to hold a job that interferes with a full-time commitment at their placement sites.

Campus Compact is a nonprofit dedicated to promoting service-learning and civic engagement on college and university campuses across the state of Oregon. We will oversee the recruitment and selection process for Members, provide them with pre-service training, and provide on-going support throughout their service.
