Position Announcement: CBL is hiring Student Advocates!

CBL, in partnership with Passion Impact and the Financial Aid Work Study Program, is hiring work study students at each of the 4 PCC campuses to be Community Engagement Advocates for the 2016-2017 Academic Year.

Neighbor to Neighbor Fairs coming this Fall to Cascade and Southeast!

Cascade Fall Fair: Wednesday, October 5th 11am-2pm
Southeast Fall Fair: Thursday, October 13th 11am-2pm
Neighbor to Neighbor Fairs are community resource and engagement fairs for the PCC community. The goals for these events are to:

  • provide opportunities for community organizations to directly connect with PCC students and faculty on our campuses
  • assist students and faculty in identifying organizations to partner with for community-based learning
  • increase student awareness of community resources and general volunteer opportunities

1. MIKE Program: Mentor with MIKE! Health Education at the heart of youth development

As a mentor, you will act as a guide and positive role model for a group of 4-5 youth. You will join a health teacher and MIKE staff to work with your youth age 14-15 in a health classroom along with a team of other mentors and their youth. Mentors will take turns providing healthy snacks to the class (paid for by MIKE Program) and facilitate small group discussions, assist with hands-on activities, participate in a field trip, and facilitate a final Health Leadership Project as each youth team creates a project to promote health within their own community.

Mentors meet once per week in a high school classroom for at least one academic semester or year-long projects. We have spots available now for the following projects: De La Salle North Catholic High School in North Portland just off the Yellow Max Line:

  • Thursdays from 11:00-12:00 PM
  • Thursdays from 12:30-1:30 PM
  • Thursdays from 1:30-2:30 PM

2. Markham SUN School – Impact NW: Teach after school SUN classes – Make a difference in the lives of kids in your community!

Are you looking to boost your resume with classroom experience? Impact NW is recruiting volunteer instructors to teach provided* curriculum to elementary students at Markham SUN School.

*Or teach your passion! Create your own 8 class curriculum and get kids excited about learning. Successful past classes include: knit and crochet, woodworking with hand tools, scrapbook and storytelling, beaded jewelry making, and chess.

(SUN also has opportunities for after school class assistants.)

Location: Markham Elementary SUN School, 10531 SW Capitol Hwy, Portland, OR 97219

Commitment: At least 1 afternoon (3-5pm)per week, Monday – Thursday for 1 term or more if you’d like!
Terms are 7-9 weeks long

  • Fall: 10/3/16 – 12/8/16
  • Winter: 1/17/17 – 3/9/17
  • Spring: 4/10/17 – 5/25/17

3. Sunshine Division: Get Involved this Fall at Sunshine Division

Are you looking for a way to give back this Fall Semester? Sunshine Division is looking for interns, work study students, and volunteers to help us in our food pantry and clothing closet.

We are flexible, but need people during the hours of 9:30-3:30pm M-F and 9-1pm Saturdays. These positions will start September 6th.

We are located at 687 N. Thompson St. Portland, OR 97227.

Put your customer service skills and social work to the test by greeting and working with low income people from all walks of life and backgrounds. Make their days better by helping them get free food and clothing. You can make a difference this Fall.

4. ReClaim It!: Volunteer to promote creative re-use & waste reduction at ReClaim It! (near PCC)

ReClaim It! is a unique non-profit resale store that gleans nearly everything we sell from the Metro Transfer Station. Reclaim it! is located at 1 N. Killingsworth (at Williams, not too far from PCC- Cascade campus). Our team of wonderful people give of their time cleaning and fixing items, setting up in-shop displays, creating DIY demo items, and being a friendly face helping customers at our re-sale store.

You can sign up for flexible volunteer shifts to help out when the store is open on Fri/Sat/Sun between 10:00 am -5:00 pm in August, & we will be adding Wed/Thurs. in Sept. too. We also have work parties when we get new items on Mondays 10:00 am-2:00 pm or by special arrangement. Other volunteer opportunities include going to the Metro Waste Transfer Station in NW Pdx to glean treasures, and helping load up our found treasures on Sundays at 1:30.

The next step to get started is to schedule an in-person tour and orientation. Folks usually come in for at least an hour to get oriented and to try out working with us.

5. Portland Community College Newberg Center: Volunteers Wanted! – Newberg Learning Garden Cob Shed Construction

Interested in learning about natural building? Earthen construction is practiced around the world and the Newberg Learning Garden is using traditional building techniques from wet and windy Wales for inspiration. We will be building the walls for the cob garden shed at the Newberg Center’s new learning garden! Our weekly work parties will be led by natural building instructor Bernhard Masterson. Volunteers welcome, come and learn new skills! Please bring work gloves, work clothes for the day’s weather, snacks and water.

Tasks: shoveling, carrying buckets, pushing wheelbarrows, mixing cob, applying and sculpting cob, trimming cob
Number of volunteers needed: 10-15

6. Girls Inc. of the Pacific Northwest: Girls Guide Volunteers Needed in Fall 2016!

You believe that girls are strong, smart and bold. Our Girls Guide volunteer opportunity is the essential way to be involved with girls and deliver our gender specific, research-based programs. Our after-school Girls Groups provides Girls with the confidence and self-esteem to access a bright and economically independent future.

We are currently recruiting for Fall 2016 Girls Guides. Please check the Events Calendar on our website to view the dates of our Fall 2016 Girls Guide Volunteer Trainings or fill out our simple online Volunteer Application to start the process!

7. VOA Oregon: Support children in trauma-informed nursery

VOA Oregon, in partnership with Providence’s My Little Waiting Room, provides drop-in childcare centers which are free, licensed, respite care for children up to age 12 while families access services for medical, legal, or domestic violence crises. We have locations at Providence Portland, Providence St. Vincent, and Gateway Domestic Violence Resources Center.

Our Trauma-Informed Child Interventionist volunteers engage in safe and fun activities like free play, arts and crafts, story time and more. Volunteers learn about child development and crisis intervention and form a special bond with children. You can participate in established activities or try your hand at curriculum development. This program has something new every day as you meet new children and clients, and get to know recurring visitors, as well.

Shifts are available Monday-Friday between the hours of 9 am and 4 pm. Volunteers commit to a weekly shift for 3-4 hours for a minimum of 3 months.
