1. PCC Equity & Empowerment Mentorship Program: Become a Mentor for a Roosevelt HS student!

The Equity & Empowerment Mentorship Program supports Roosevelt H.S. students who are interested in going to college and changing their lives through education.
As a Mentor with the program, PCC students will participate in group meetings which bring college Mentors and Roosevelt Mentee students together. These meetings are interactive and engaging in order to cultivate a sense of active participation among the Mentors and Mentees. The program’s focus is around identifying and building upon students strengths and empowering them to pursue secondary education. The program endeavors to center the students’ voice, lived experience and needs through inquiry rather than assuming what students need based on our own lived experiences.
The current time commitment is 4 hours a month beginning January 2017.

• A 1 hour training will take place on November 14th for Mentors at PCC Cascade.
• There will also be a 3 hour Kick Off Event at Roosevelt with Mentors and Mentees on December 16th. Mentors/Mentees will be assigned during the Kick Off event and, in January, Mentors will begin scheduling regular meetings with their mentee(s).

2. Growing Gardens: Garden Build Day (Saturday 10/15)

Join a Garden Build Day (FALL 2016)! Every fall we build gardens for families with limited resources enrolled in our Home Gardens Program. Having a garden in ones’s backyard is a power step towards increasing fresh food access and addressing hunger in Oregon. Our garden builds are a family friendly volunteer experience and we build rain or shine! You can choose from two days: Saturday, October 15th. Volunteers who sign up stay with us from 10am-4pm. Your involvement strengthens our local community!

3. Hillsboro Public Library: Book lovers volunteer with our library book sale! (Oct 15th-16th)

Love books? Libraries? Events? Join a great group of volunteers to help set up the semi-annual Friends of Hillsboro Public Library book sale and transform an empty meeting room into the county’s largest used book sale. The funds we raise go toward new library books and materials that help our library patrons read, learn, and explore their curiosity!

Shifts are at the Brookwood Library, 2850 NE Brookwood Parkway, Hillsboro. We’ll be alphabetizing and sorting on October 15-16.

I. Use your Spanish skills to support a young child

Our Family Relief Nursery, a child abuse prevention program, is seeking a bilingual volunteer to assist in our trauma-informed preschool. We support at risk families and help keep their families together and kids on track for school. Volunteers are essential for engaging children in play, games, art, and more. You’ll also provide valuable connection with our Spanish speaking families and get hands on experience in child development.

Opportunities are available M-Th from 9:30 am-12:30 pm at our East Family Relief Nursery at 2609 SE 136th Ave Portland. We ask volunteers to commit to a weekly shift for at least 6 months. Families are in our program for 12-18 months, so you’ll really form close bonds.

II. Facilitate positive after school activities for youth-Gambling Prevention

Youth Gambling Prevention (a program of Volunteers of America Oregon) is a community partner with Floyd Light Middle School’s SUN School’s (School’s Uniting Neighborhoods) after school program to disseminate gambling prevention strategies to youth through providing hands-on experiences and positive adult bonding.

Volunteers will play an integral role in facilitating activities for youth, building positive relationships and watching children grow. This is a great opportunity to gain skills in child development, teaching, and counseling.

Three month commitment of a weekly shift on Mondays; with the exception of school/VOA Oregon closures.
Activities are from 3:45-5:05 P.M.
Volunteer for one, two, or all three terms offered below:

• 10/03/16 – 12/12/16, Theme: Games of all kinds
• 01/09/17 – 03/20/17, Theme: DIY Art Projects
• 04/17/17 – 06/12/17, Theme: KaHW! Outdoor Field Trips

5. Molly’s Fund Fighting Lupus: Volunteers needed on 10/15 and 10/22 for 2016 Gossamer Gala

Molly’s Fund Fighting Lupus is having a fundraiser October 22, 2016. Our Gossamer Gala is a “Portland Formal” affair featuring the dance music of Patrick Lamb! Guest will also have the opportunity to hear from Molly and other guest speakers as well as participate in our auction and raffle.

Volunteers will be helping set up the room and auction items, greet guests, check in and out guests and sell raffle tickets throughout the night.

6. Friends of Trees: Plant with Friends of Trees at Jackson Bottom Wetlands – Sat, Oct 8th!

Join us for the first of two plantings this season in partnership with the City of Hillsboro and Clean Water Services at Jackson Bottom Wetlands preserve.

When: Saturday, Oct 8th, 9am-1pm
Where: Jackson Bottom Wetlands, 2600 Southwest Hillsboro Highway, Hillsboro, OR 97123

Please arrive around 8:45am to be registered and assigned to a crew. There will be an approximately 10 minute walk from the parking lot to the planting area. The event will start promptly at 9:00am. We provide breakfast snacks and hot chocolate/coffee, as well as gloves, tools and guidance. Please come dressed for the weather and wearing sturdy, closed-toe shoes and get ready to have fun!

Drop in for our monthly Wednesday ‘freelance’ work parties to become a steward of our beloved natural area: Forest Park! Volunteer Freelancers will take a short hike to one of our various sites and work off-trail removing English ivy. This is a DIRTY job so come prepared in grubby, long-sleeved clothing and boots. We’ll provide gloves, tools and snacks. Volunteers will meet at the Lower Macleay field house located at 2960 NW Upshur St. Activities include: Invasive Plant Removal.

Join volunteers for this monthly Third Saturday Cleanup in Northwest Portland. Pick up litter and remove graffiti in the area. Join us for some coffee and conversation afterward. Volunteers should come prepared with completed waiver forms (if possible) and work gloves on cold days. Activities include: Litter Cleanup.

V. SOLVE: Maddax Woods Monthly Cleanup for October 15th

Families are welcome to help the Friends of Maddox Woods clean the trails and garden areas in the park. Make this a monthly tradition! All ages and ability levels are needed. We have tools and gloves and provide donated refreshments for all. Activities include: Invasive Plant Removal, Litter Cleanup, Native Planting, Maintenance & Monitoring, Trail blazing and path paving.

VI. Fort Vancouver Riverside Beach Cleanup (Oct 15th)

We are beautifying Vancouver’s waterfront! This project will primarily involve picking up litter along the Columbia River east of the I-5 within the property of Fort Vancouver National Historic Site. October is an important time to remove this litter from this area before higher tides and increased rainfall washes it into the river. Gloves, trash bags, and trash picker-uppers will be provided. Lunch break planned around noon-ish. There is no minimum time requirement, you can for 50 minutes or the full 4 hours! We appreciate all the help that we can get!

VII. Friends of Woods Memorial Park October Restoration Event (Oct 22nd)

Join the Friends of Woods Park every 4th Saturday in removing invasive non-native species, including English ivy, clematis, and Himalayan blackberry. Native plantings and trail work are done on a seasonal basis.Tools, gloves and snacks provided. Please dress for the weather, wear sturdy, closed toed shoes and bring a water bottle.This is a family-friendly event and all ages are welcome but children must be supervised by an adult. VIII. 4th Saturday in October Clean-up at LeRoy Haagen Park (Oct 22nd)

Attention Oregon! Skip across the border for some SW Washington style restoration work! We will be focusing on the removal of invasive plant, shining geranium in a deforested area in the center of the woods at LeRoy Haagen Park. People enjoy hanging out in this area and too frequently leave their litter behind. The hope is to return the area to its intended purpose of habitat and a nature trail for walkers and joggers. This is a great activity for young children and the young at heart. Please contact if you feel you have special needs but would still like to volunteer. Please contact as well if you are interested in coordinating these monthly efforts at the park. There is something for nearly everyone. Activities include: Invasive Plant Removal, Native Planting, Probably some light litter removal.

XI. SOLVE: Join a Last Saturday Weed Warrior Service Project for October 29th

Join the Weed Warrior effort to restore a healthy habitat at Mt. Tabor Park. The Weed Warrior Stewardship Coordinator and volunteer crew leaders will share their knowledge of the natural habitat, demonstrate how to remove non-native vegetation, and help keep us organized, safe and motivated! We will make sure that you are comfortable and contribute in ways that match your skills and interests. Wear comfortable clothes that are appropriate for working in natural areas: long pants, long sleeves, brimmed hat to protect from sun/rain, and closed-toe sturdy shoes. Bring a water bottle. We provide you with tools, gloves, and snacks. Activities include: Invasive Plant Removal, Litter Cleanup.

X. SOLVE: East Glisan Cleanup for October 29th

Join local residents and business owners at this monthly cleanup between 60th and 80th on NE Glisan. We are hoping to create a stronger sense of community and support in the area while keeping litter away from wildlife out of our waterways. All cleanup supplies are provided!
