TOWARD PEDAGOGIES OF CRITICAL COMMUNITY-BASED LEARNING SYMPOSIUM
Date: Friday, November 4, 9am – 4:30pm
Location: Smith Memorial Student Union, Portland State University
Purpose
To illuminate the power inequalities that undergird community-based learning and promote community engagement pedagogies that are rooted in social justice ideals and values.
Objectives
- To politicize community engagement and to engender “justice learning” at the intersection of community-based learning and social justice education
- To provide a space for practitioners to come together and exchange insights about how to effectively conceptualize, implement, and assess community-based learning that is critical of the status quo and that challenges unjust structures and systems of oppression
Potential Session Themes/Topics
- Online critical community-based learning
- Care, critical consciousness, and social justice sense-making; culturally responsive/sensitive engagement; authentic relationships; best practices
- Assessment (partnership and/or learning)
- Publishing
- Faculty development: “train the trainer”
