Sylvania: Spring Term Orientation for ESOL Tutors (Wed, April 12th)
Sylvania ESOL Community-Based Learning Project opportunity! Volunteer as a tutor for ESOL students in their classes. Every Wednesday from 10am-10:50am OR 7:00 pm to 7:50 pm, you will tutor small groups of ESOL students from levels 1 or 3. This tutoring will happen in the ESOL classroom (here on the Sylvania campus) under the supervision of the ESOL instructor, who will provide the tutoring activities for each session. During the tutoring sessions, you will be doing a range of activities such as: Helping the ESOL students write sentences, read simple texts, and having conversations about life in the U.S.A.

Newberg Center Learning Garden: Come Learn Cob Natural Building and Help Out the Newberg Center Learning Garden (Sat, April 1st)
Come join us in continuing the creation of a beautiful community space and active learning lab that will also be a food producing garden. PCC Newberg Center’s Learning Garden is hosting the first cob work party of the season on Saturday, April 1st from 9am to 1pm. Learn what cob natural building is all about and have some fun working with clay, straw, and sand. We are hoping to have as many people as possible in order to make this an effective event and get some more of the cob structure finished, so invite your friends and family! This is a wonderful opportunity for students, faculty, and community members to get involved, learn about what’s going on in the PCC Newberg Learning Garden, build community, exchange knowledge, and develop hands-on experience in natural cob building. It’s also a great opportunity to build resumes, portfolios, and volunteer hours.
The details: Saturday, April 1st from 9am to 1pm in the PCC Newberg Center Learning Garden located on the corner of Brutscher St and E Fernwood Rd. There will be refreshments and kids are welcome. Please bring a water bottle, wear clothes that can get a little dirty, boots or shoes that can get muddy, and a rain jacket is great too. Volunteer for the 37th Annual Trillium Festival! The 37th Annual Trillium Festival at Tryon Creek Natural Area is an educational event for the whole community that celebrates spring. Volunteers help in numerous ways, from traffic control and plant sale cashiers to event hospitality and education stations. It’s our largest annual event and we need you!

Friends of Trees: Plant Trees with Friends of Trees in NE Portland! (Sat, April 1st)
Have the signs of Spring got you looking to get outside? Would you like to help your community in a few short hours? Don’t mind getting a little dirty? If so, join Friends of Trees as we plant nearly 200 street and yard trees in the NE Portland neighborhoods of Beaumont-Wilshire, Cully, and Roseway!
When: Saturday, April 1st, 9am-12pm (Please arrive around 8:40am to be assigned a planting crew and enjoy some free breakfast snacks and hot coffee/tea) The event will start promptly at 9:00am and finish up around 1pm with a delicious potluck lunch provided for all of our volunteers!

Groups of Planters Welcome! We love a planting posse! We ask that any group of 5 or more simply pre-register via our Group Registration Form. We provide gloves, tools and guidance–no tree care experience needed! Be sure to come dressed for the weather wearing sturdy closed-toe shoes, waterproof layers (rain pants, rain jacket) you don’t mind getting dirty, a hat, and get ready to have fun! Backyard Habitat Certification Program and Columbia Land Trust: Volunteer for the Backyard Habitat Native Plant Sale (April 7th & 8th)
Would you like to volunteer at the Backyard Habitat Certification Program’s spring plant sale on Friday, April 7 and Saturday, April 8 (Echo Valley Nursery, Oregon City OR)? This sale is offered twice a year, once in the spring by Columbia Land Trust leads and once in the fall by Audubon Society of Portland. We are excited to partner with Echo Valley Natives for a third year to offer discounted native plants to Backyard Habitat Certification Program participants. We’re seeking volunteers who would like to answer customer questions, provide general event assistance, and support onsite parking and plant loading. You’ll go home feeling great that you helped distribute thousands of native plants to nearby backyards.

Hillsboro Public Library: Book lovers join the Hillsboro Public Library Book Brigade! (April 9th, 15th, & 22nd)
Book lovers, organizers, and alphabetizers, this is the project for you! Join a great group of volunteers to set up the semi-annual Friends of Hillsboro Public Library Book Sale. We’ll be unpacking, sorting, and organizing more than 800 boxes of books for sale. The book sale raises funds for new Library books and materials that inspire curiosity and encourage learning. Hillsboro Public Library enriches and strengthens our community by supporting the pursuit of connection, inspiration, and lifelong learning.

Alberta Main Street: Earth Day Clean Up (Sat., April 22, 2017)
The seventh annual Earth Day Clean Up, presented by Pacific Power, is Saturday, April 22nd, 2017. The Earth Day district cleanup is more than just a day of litter and graffiti removal; it is a day to meet your neighbors, build community and celebrate at the Golden Garbage Awards.

Partners for a Hunger-Free Oregon: Volunteer to End Senior Hunger
For the past few years, PHFO’s SNAP Outreach Team has run a SNAP Application Assistance Pilot with organizations in the Portland-Metro area to focus our outreach and application assistance on seniors, who tend to have a very low participation rate in SNAP compared with the general population.
This year we are working with Meals on Wheels in Washington and Multnomah counties to continue to adapt and improve our application assistance model. The focus will be on face-to-face interactions within Meals on Wheels meal sites. The project will be running between April and July of 2017. Training on SNAP and Application assistance as well as orientation to Meals on Wheels sites will happen in mid-to-late April (exact dates TBA).

The Nature Conservancy: Become a Conservation Leader
Are you looking to expand your leadership, public speaking and/or naturalist skills while helping protect some of Oregon’s most remarkable places? If so, we invite you to apply to become a volunteer naturalist or crew leader for The Nature Conservancy in Oregon. Leaders commit to volunteering on two weekend days during the field season (May-October), in addition to attending a training session.

Columbia Slough Watershed Council: Join the Columbia Slough Watershed 2017 Paddle Team Cohort! (Application Deadline Mon., April 10th)
Each year the Columbia Slough Watershed Council hosts dozens of educational paddling events that expose adults and children to the wonders of the Columbia Slough. We’re seeking paddlers who would like to volunteer to assist with our Evening Canoe paddles, Slough School kids’ paddles and our summer festivals – no experience necessary!
As a member of the Paddle Team you will be contributing to a growing program that strives to engage communities in Fairview, Gresham and Portland to learn about, enjoy, and assist with restoration efforts of their local watershed and natural areas. Attendance at these events varies from 30 to 800 people.

Alzheimer’s Association Oregon Chapter: Get Involved in the 2017 RivALZ Flag Football Game
Alzheimer’s Association RivALZ is a volunteer-driven event that engages young professionals in friendly but fierce flag football games around the country. 2017 marks our chapter’s second annual Oregon vs. Oregon State game to inspire fundraising, awareness and action in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease.
Looking to get involved? We need dedicated players and volunteers to help with fundraising and game day set-up. Want to cheer from the crowd? Donate $20 or more to one of our players and you can receive admission to the game. It’s time to pick a side! Together, we can tackle Alzheimer’s. The Geezer Gallery: Volunteers needed for art/writing program
The Geezer Gallery, a non-profit organization in Portland, Oregon needs volunteers to assist in an art/writing program that’s brought to senior communities. The program is 3 hours a week and is 12 weeks long. Because we develop a trust culture with participants we would like someone who can help out for the duration. We explore storytelling and use art to reflect and embellish the stories. In addition to prep time, volunteers would be helping set up and tear down for classes as well as one-on-one help with participants. This is an evidence-based program which has shown to have positive aspects in aging.

Portland Fruit Tree Project: Internship Application Deadline Mon, April 3rd
I. Communications & Development Intern: The Comms & Devo intern will primarily support the Communications & Office Coordinator in creating and implementing social media and print/digital media campaigns, writing and editing press releases, and promoting Portland Fruit Tree Project’s programs and events. Additionally, the intern will assist with data entry, grant and donation processing, and fundraising and event planning and support, along with other basic office management tasks, as needed.
Time commitment: 12-20 hours per week for 6 months OR 15-25 hours for 3 months. The internship is slated to start the beginning of April. For the right candidate, we can be flexible on exact timing of start and end dates.

II. Harvest Intern: This (unpaid) Harvest Internship will support Portland Fruit Tree Project’s flagship program. Between June and November of 2017, the Harvest Department of PFTP will coordinate 80+ fruit tree harvesting events in and around the city of Portland. We will also be piloting two new program elements to empower even more neighbors to share in the harvest and care of fruit trees. The Harvest Program Intern will commit to a 3-month (15-25 hrs/wk) or 6-month (12-20 hrs/wk) internship for depending on your goals and availability. The position is slated to begin in mid-April.

III. Orchard Steward Intern: During this (unpaid) internship, the Orchard Stewardship Intern will work with volunteers and staff to coordinate and maintain our five Community Orchard sites, and conduct monthly “work & learn” parties, where we teach organic orchard care. You will gain great event coordination and volunteer coordination experience, connections in the local food & urban agriculture movement, and the fulfillment of knowing that your efforts will make a positive impact for hundreds of people in the Portland area!
This internship requires a commitment of 12-20 hours per week for 6 months, slated to begin early April. We can be flexible with exact start and end dates.
