Soccer Coach/Mentor
Dates: September 16 – December 8, 2017
Hours: Monday-Thursday; 2-5:30 pm (varies slightly based on school site)
Reports to: SUN site manager and AC Portland program coordinator
Pay: $15/hour
Active Children Portland provides free after-school programming in 25 elementary and middle schools around the Portland area. We believe every child should have access to a safe space to play, learn, and grow, and our Coach-Mentors are key to this. Now in our sixth year, Active Children Portland partners with local service providers at SUN Schools (Schools Uniting Neighborhoods) where the need for free sports and enhanced educational programming is greatest. As a Coach-Mentor, you will be trained in nationally accredited Soccer for Success curriculum, specifically designed to use soccer as a vehicle for social change and to help kids develop the skills to help them succeed on and off the field.
The Position:
- Coach a Soccer for Success team of 15 young students that do not have access to organized sports.
- Work with a SUN school site directly; through the larger service provider operating that site (ie. Latino Network, IRCO, MFS, etc.)
- Implement the Soccer for Success and SCORES curriculum, teaching soccer skills and classroom lessons, highlighting these specific areas:
- Physical Activity and Wellness
- Mentorship
- Family Engagement
- Creative Writing
- Community Service
- Support SUN school site as a full instructor, helping with students throughout the afternoon program.
- Participate in 2 Active Children Portland training sessions and maintain weekly communication (calls, emails, etc.) with AC Portland staff.
Qualifications:
- Soccer or coaching experience is a plus, but if you enjoy working with children and have some familiarity with the game, education, or youth development, you are a great candidate.
- Commitment to the AC Portland mission of improving lives through sport.
- Ability to adhere to all SUN site rules and policies, AC Portland rules and policies, and a desire to promote the mission using the given curriculum.
- A high level of integrity, accuracy, dependability, enthusiasm, and confidentiality.
- Must be authorized to work in the U.S. without Visa sponsorship.
- Must go through a background check upon acceptance.
- Must be 18 years or older.
Healthy Living:
Kids attend Active Children Portland’s Soccer for Success program after school 4 times a week throughout the academic year. Participants learn about eating right and other ways to stay healthy, and they gain important decision-making and relationship skills from their interactions with coach-mentors and peers.
Mentorship:
Soccer for Success coaches are also mentors. They teach kids the fundamentals of soccer, but also strive to help children build confidence and recognize the value of hard work, teamwork and persistence in achieving personal goals. By learning what it takes to play a team sport, kids are also being prepared to be productive citizens.
Community-Focused:
The lessons Soccer for Success teaches don’t stop on the field. Coach-mentors meet with families regularly to educate parents and guardians about how to embrace an active and healthy lifestyle and nurture their child’s personal growth.
Creative Writing:
America SCORES empowers students in urban communities using soccer, writing, creative expression, and service-learning. You will use their Power of Poetry curriculum to provide your team with unique opportunities for learning and creative expression through active, engaging, poetry lessons.
