Washington County Juvenile Department: Mentor At-Risk Youth with STEP Mentoring Program!
Posted by Madison Omohundro
Mentor At-Risk Youth!
The Washington County Juvenile Department is seeking volunteers to mentor youth between the ages of 12-17. The goal of the Mentoring Program is to build on a youth’s motivation, inspire hope, and treat all youth and families with dignity, respect, and an awareness of the impact of trauma on their lives. A mentor is a person assigned specifically to a youth to assist them in reaching personal goals, such as academic success, obtaining employment, developing social skills, and participating in positive, pro-social activities. Mentors are matched with a youth based on mutual interests, personality, and language/cultural needs.
Mentors be at least 20 years old, able to pass a criminal background check, have a good driving record, and commit to a minimum of 6 months with 8 hours of face to face contact with the youth and weekly contact. An initial 5 hour training is required with optional training opportunities being available as well. This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in working with youth, to give back to the community, and to make the difference in the life of a young person.

About the Volunteer Opportunities Newsletter
The Volunteer Opportunities Newsletter allows students, faculty, and staff at PCC a more comprehensive look at volunteer needs and opportunities from our community partners. Our hope is that the newsletter will allow subscribers to stay better informed about community service opportunities in the tri-county areas of Portland, Oregon, as well as non-profit internships and scholarships available locally and nationally.
