Wetlands 101: Road Trip!
Saturday April 28, 10:00am – 2:30pm
Join the Council and local experts for a hands-on workshop about everyone’s favorite muddy, wet, and wildlife-rich places. Learn about the importance of wetlands in urban communities, how wetland mitigation occurs, and what plants and animals rely on wetlands to survive.
Pack your lunch, park your bike or car, and join us in our wetlands mobile for a tour of N and NE Portland’s richest wetland spots! Visit and learn about both mitigated and unmitigated wetlands and how water is treated before entering The Slough. Check out an amazing wildlife underpass, several green streets initiatives, talk about the Columbia River levee system and do some wetlands sampling with us!
Tour stops: Vanport Wetlands, Kelly Point Park area wetlands, Port of Portland Wildlife Undercrossing and wetlands, Smith and Bybee Lake wetlands overlook at St John’s Prairie.
Evening Canoe the Slough

Bring the whole family for a safe and fun canoe trip on the slow-moving Columbia Slough! Using our “bimaran” configuration and kayaks, this trip is safe for infants and grandparents alike. We’ll provide the boats, lifejacket, paddle, and a canoe captain to steer – you provide the paddling muscle. You are also welcome to BYOB (bring your own boat) if you have one!
Enjoy the water, plants, and wildlife from the best seat possible! $5-8/person $15-20/family suggested donation, advanced registration required.
Brunch with the Birds
Friday May 11, 11:00am – 1:00pm
Join Council Member Amira El-Cherbini for a lunchtime birding tour at Smith and Bybee lake. Be on the lookout for songbirds and spring migrants before settling down together and eating the brown bag lunches that we bring. Look for our blue signs, and meet up at the picnic tables!

About the Volunteer Opportunities Newsletter
The Volunteer Opportunities Newsletter allows students, faculty, and staff at PCC a more comprehensive look at volunteer needs and opportunities from our community partners. Our hope is that the newsletter will allow subscribers to stay better informed about community service opportunities in the tri-county areas of Portland, Oregon, as well as non-profit internships and scholarships available locally and nationally.
