Cascade Gallery starts its 2009-2010 programming with a refreshing flower shower by painter Mary Warner. For centuries, artists of this genre have sought to capture the beauty of flowers emulating floral luster, colors and textures. The fragility and short life of flowers can seemingly be averted through the perceptibly permanent medium of oil paint on canvas.
What prevails in today’s star struck art world are the use of computer generated tracings, color field silhouettes, doodle stylized interpretations, reductive and slacker esthetics. Warner’s paintings of chrysanthemums, roses, thistles and rubbery bubble flowers are for those who want close up depictions of floral contemplation, compositions working to overcome the limitations of two-dimensional surfaces, and a stirring up their senses. Warner’s beautiful draftsmanship, sensual forms of flowers as desirable objects of beauty, and even her buzzing insects broadcast the abundance of the bloom.
