Wendy Kveck: Artist’s Statement

In recent work, food has evolved into content and material, a layered symbol that simultaneously informs abstractions and directs or embellishes my figurative narratives. These examine representations of women as cultural signifiers of excess, desire, anxiety and fear-  Woman as  Consumer and the Consumed.   The concept of food as gendered, coupled with the studio experience of food-as-paint/paint-as-food prompted investigations into two feminine histories- the fasting saints of the medieval period and 19th century Victorian hunger, sexuality and etiquette. These histories reveal relationships to food that navigate body and psyche, discipline and subversion, ecstatic devotion and hysteria.  My paintings explore the structures and symptoms of these sacred socio-cultural value systems as I work to build and destroy the self-inflicted doctrines of my own ethics of aesthetics.
