Aaron Johanson
Veteran Portland photographer Aaron Johanson will be exhibiting an extended portrait collection of this region’s art community at PCC Sylvania’s North View gallery, November 18 through December 17. Featuring over 100 images of artists, curators, writers, dealers and his own family members, this exhibition will elaborate on a portfolio of Johanson’s black and white photos recently included in the Marylhurst Art Gym’s exhibition, Album–Artist Portraits of Artists. Johanson began his project in the mid-1990s while documenting work in artist’s studios. Inspired by the intimacy of the work spaces, Johanson turned his camera on the artists themselves, living with and performing their work—revealing and poignant portraits emerged. The show will include images of Portland’s most celebrated art practitioners along with some less recognizable faces. Johanson works with black and white film using traditional darkroom processes. He will be in the Gallery to deliver a talk Thursday, November 18 at 2pm. An evening reception follows from 5:30-8pm.
