Ink on paper, words on the page – how long will we hold on to this physical connection to language and information?
Cascade Gallery presents new letterpress and collage work by Inge Bruggeman. Bruggeman explores the paper substrate as object itself, as a place where language resides . . . or has resided, as it currently is departing from this territory. Language is leaving the page and deserting the book for more modern reading and storage devices. Simultaneously, however, this shift has caused a heightened awareness and desire for a continued physical connection to the way we store and share information – to the object and the idea of paper.
Responding to writing by Jacques Derrida and Debra Di Blasi, work in this show hinges on the “anxiety of the blank page” and the persistence of the era of a “paper form of knowledge” — notions from Derrida’s essay “Paper or Me, You Know… (New Speculations on a Luxury of the Poor).” Through the process of letterpress from metal type, wood type, and photopolymer plates Bruggeman considers Di Blasi’s concern for text in a world in which thought becomes medium.
Inge Bruggeman lives and works in Portland, Oregon. She is a faculty member at the Oregon College of Art & Craft, where she teaches in the Book Arts Department, as well as in Foundations, General Studies and the Fibers Department. Bruggeman travels both nationally and internationally to give lectures and workshops. Her work is included in collections such as the Joan Flasch Artists’ Book Collection at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago, the artists’ book collection at the British Library in London, the Atelier Vis-à-Vis in Marseille France, the Walker Arts Center, and in collections at universities such as Harvard, Stanford, and the University of California. Recent activities include a residency in Marseille, France, followed by an academic year teaching sabbatical for the MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts at the Columbia College Chicago; the 2012 Mitchell Lecture & MFA workshop at the University of Iowa; and a 2013 lecture in Chartres, France for the closing events of the exhibition Délires de Livres.
