Michael Reinsch and Ruth Lanz-December 2nd at 3pm
Mark Smith
Michael Reinsch will sing songs to paintings by Ruth Lantz at PCC. Utilizing primarily a baritone ukulele, Reinsch will perform anti-folk stream of consciousness songs with a catchy pop chorus. There is a special place in his heart for these paintings and it his hope that these objects of his affection can truly know how he really feels. The event is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 2 at 3 PM in the gallery.
Michael Reinsch is a performance artist, collage artist, and gallery Owner based in Gold Hill in Southern Oregon. He earned his MFA in Visual Studies from the Pacific Northwest College of Art in 2009. His work incorporates performance and activated sculptural props to explore human connection and disconnection, often through themes of celebration and melancholy.
Ruth Lantz explores the intersection between painting, photography, and digital imagery. Commingling abstraction and representation she approaches her painted works through a series of filtration systems: perceptual, process driven, and painterly. Lantz compiles these tensional forces to examine the continual translation, overlap, and fracture implicated by sight. Using scanners, projectors and other digital tools, she manipulates found landscape images that serve as underlying structures in her work that explores how technology has altered the way we understand and mediate our surroundings. Condensing the digital affect and the painterly sensation into one inscrutable surface, Lantz creates an image that is at once familiar but also removed, thus, challenging the viewer to question the nature of visual appearances.
Lantz, originally from Illinois, received her Masters in Visual Studies from the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, OR — where she still resides. She has been featured in galleries atthe University of Illinois at Chicago, the Pacific Northwest College of Art, Washington State University Vancouver, Lower Columbia College (Longview WA), Linfield College (McMinnville OR) and Governors State University (University Park IL). Her work has been seen in spaces such as: The Laura Russo Gallery (Portland OR), Disjecta (Portland OR), Ditch Projects (Springfield OR) and Swarm Gallery (Oakland CA). Lantz has received RACC and CAAP grants and was a nominee for the Joan Mitchell Foundation MFA Award. She is currently an instructor at Portland Community College and Washington State University Vancouver.
