Pamplin Media Group – Student Writing Internships
Glenna Barrick-Harwood
Internships provide wonderful opportunities for students to get hand-on experience in and put their writing skills to work. Pamplin Media Group, a media conglomerate of local community newspapers (the largest one being Portland Tribune), has writing internships available. PCC has had several students intern for Pamplin in the past. They learn a lot about writing and typically get published with a byline within a month.
To quote a prior PCC writing student intern: I learned how to write eye-catching ledes and found new and exciting ways of telling stories. I met and talked with interesting people during interviews, coordinated shoots with photographers, and made invaluable connections with local people in the journalism field.
In fact, a student who interned at Pamplin for the past two terms just got hired for a writing position at an engineering firm (she was also offered a job at Pamplin the same day!) She attributes both to the fact that she did internships at the paper.
Internships often open unforeseen doors!
