PCC Celebrates Women’s History Month

Portland Community College will celebrate Women’s History Month with events throughout the month of March. Most events will be held at Sylvania Campus, 12000 S.W. 49th Ave. Here is the program:

SYLVANIA CAMPUS Monday, March 1

noon-1p.m., Upper College Center Building Mall

Women’s Courage, Women’s Strength: The Prose and Poetry of Women of Color

An open mike featuring poetry, short stories, and letters written by women of color about the issues that shape their lives. The event is hosted by PCC student groups, the Black Student Union and Collective Voice.

1-3 p.m., ST Building, rm. 101

Film: Out of the Past

Documentary on the battles lesbian, gay and bisexual students have waged in their fight for equal rights. Following the film, PCC instructor Ann Mussey will facilitate a discussion of the history of women and lesbian women.

6:30-9:20 p.m.

Arab Women Lift the Veil, HT Building, rm. 307

A panel of Arab women who live and work in Portland speak about their lives, culture and concerns. Though caricatured in Western media as a homogenous group of veiled subordinates, the panel will introduce the audience to the diversity of the Arab women’s experience.

Tuesday, March 2

11 a.m.-noon, Cedar Room, CC Building

Monica R. Flori, author and professor at Lewis and Clark College, will lead a discussion about the art and work of writing. The discussion will focus on the influences, motivating forces and the work of the six contemporary Argentinean women writers she features in her book, “Streams of Silver.”

noon-1:30 p.m., Little Theater, CT Building

Artist Debra Beers, painter, sculptor, social activist and teacher, will talk about her background, development of, and approach to art, including a slide presentation. Beers

works with and advocates for the rights of street youth. Her most recent work focuses on a small segment of downtown Portland’s homeless residents and their wider street community.

12:30 p.m.-1:50 p.m., SS Building, rm. 107

Women’s Ways of Knowing: Feminist Therapy

Jackie Elliott, master’s degree candidate and contributing writer to the college text book, “Counseling Theory and Interventions,” who is currently interning in the PCC Sylvania Counseling Center, will discuss the psychological development of women and the influence of feminism on the profession and practice of psychotherapy.

Women of Color Conference: “Doin’ it Ourselves Celebration of Sisterhood”

A celebration of the rich and diverse lives of women of color from Portland Community College and the community. The day-long conference features a continental breakfast, workshops, keynote speaker Okianer Christian Dark, who is an assistant US attorney, a light lunch and entertainment. Thursday, March 4

noon-1 p.m., Pine Room, CC Building

Panel: Wired Women

A panel of women computer scientists and software engineers will discuss the impact women have had on the exploding, high-tech field. The panel will present ideas for networking and career building, as well as information on emerging employment trends in the industry.

Friday, March 5

noon-1 p.m., Cafeteria stage, CC Building

Singer songwriter Annie Rapid will perform selections from her CD, “Roses and Ash.”

Monday, March 8

noon-1 p.m., Sylvania Room, CC Building

International Women’s Day Celebration Luncheon and Fashion Show

Join PCC’s international women students and staff as they share traditional clothing and stories from their native cultures and update us on the status of women in their countries of origin. The event is free and includes a luncheon. Seating is limited. Reservations will be taken beginning March 1 with priority given to PCC students. Call 977-8101.

Film: Breasts

The film “Breasts” presents interviews with 28 women about how their breasts and society’s reactions have influenced a woman’s identity. An open discussion follows, led by Kim Saliba, an instructor in PCC’s Social Science division.

Women’s Writes

Open mike for poetry, songs, mobilization. Sponsored by the Sylvania Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance. Coffee-house atmosphere will be staged.

Wednesday, March 10

noon-1 p.m., Performing Arts Center

Women Work, performance

Melinda E. Pittman and the Angels will perform hits from their comedy music show, “Paradise Flossed,” and songs from the new upcoming show, “Wonderbroads.”

The Angels are known for their sassy, satiric parodies. Pittman has been performing pro-union comedy and music in solo shows and with the Angels for 15 years. The event is sponsored by the PCC Classified and Faculty Federation Labor History Mural Project.

Executive Dean’s Reception

Alice Jacobson, executive dean of the Sylvania Campus, will host a reception to celebrate Women’s History Month. The reception includes an exhibit of women students’ art, the awarding of the 1999 Women’s History Month essay contest winner, and musical entertainment. Light refreshments will be served.

Friday, April 23

Matriarchs Through History

The production, “Reinventing the Power of the Will: Matriarchs through History,” is a historical journey featuring women from different ethnic backgrounds. This dramatic interpretation is written, produced, directed and acted by PCC students, faculty and staff.

Book Discussion: “Journal to the Soul: The Art of Sacred Journal Keeping”

Book discussion. If you’ve never kept a journal, this book will inspire you to start. Come to the discussion group to share ideas on what inspires you.

Women’s History Month Lunch: Women in Art

Come meet artist and winner of the Rock Creek Women’s History Month Poster Contest Angelika Rhoades. In addition to Rhoades, the luncheon features two other speakers, artists Liz Knight and Linda Berkeley. Seating is limited and first priority is given to PCC students. Women’s Health Fair

Local health advocates and organizations for women will be on hand to share information on their organizations. Participants include the Oregon School of Massage, the College of Oriental Medicine, the College of Naturopathic Medicine, the Washington County Health and Human Services department, Planned Parenthood and the Breast Cancer Clinic.

March 1-5

International Quilt Display, Cascade Hall, interior street

A collection of 27 quilts, titled, “Child Abuse Quilts: Revealing and Healing the Pain of Child Abuse,” will be displayed at Cascade.

Wednesday, March 3

11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m., Terrell Hall, rm. 122

Something Beautiful

Barbara Woods, a local quilter, talks about her personal journey and the healing process she has undergone to recover from sexual abuse from childhood to adulthood. She will show her quilt from the project on display March 1-5 in Cascade Hall.

The talk repeats on Wednesday, March 10, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at the PCC Metropolitan Workforce Training Center, 5600 NE 42nd.

Many Strong and Beautiful Women

This theatrical production was developed by the Sam Barlow High School’s Theater Arts program. The show portrays a woman’s life from adolescence to maturity, illuminating the possibilities for the future, while invoking memories from past experiences. The play draws from literature by and about women. A question-and-answer session follows the 50-minute production.
