PCC Northview Gallery Shows Sculpture, Painting
Photos and story by Mark Evertz
The current show at Portland Community College’s Northview Gallery features the work of two artists: sculptor Margaret Eccles and painter Joseph Mann. The gallery is located in Room 214 of the CT Building at the PCC Sylvania Campus, 12000 S.W. 49th Ave.
The sculpture of Margaret Eccles refers to the human figure. Inspired by the structure of the dressmaker’s form, Eccles recreates, simplifies and abstracts this reference to the figure. The form’s open matrix of wooden slats invites the viewer to examine both exterior and interior dimensions of the larger-than-life-size sculptures.
The oil paintings of Joseph Mann draw inspiration from the human figure as well. They represent figurative work created from memory and imagination. These paintings – their imagery, surfaces, and the evidence of repeated layers of paint – reflect both the struggle and excitement that the interpretive process provokes for the artist.
The show opens Thursday Feb. 20 with a reception from 7-9 p.m. The public is invited. The show continues to Friday, March 21. Gallery hours are Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Fridays, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
