Portland Teachers Program Puts Money Where Its Heart Is

Photos and story by

The Portland Teachers Program promotes diversification of the teaching workforce in Portland Public Schools by offering scholarships, advising and support to persons from ethnic minorities who would like to become teachers. All children benefit from seeing teachers from a variety of ethnic backgrounds as successful role models.

The program is a collaborative effort between Portland Community College, Portland State University and Portland Public Schools.

Applications are being taken now from persons of Indian, African-American, Asian and Hispanic backgrounds for Ethnic Minority in Education Assistance Award scholarships. The deadline to apply is April 7. Only Oregon permanent residents can be accepted into the program.

Those who meet the eligibility criteria in writing, math and reading can compete for one of 15 scholarships which will grant them free tuition for five years. The award covers two years at PCC, two years at PSU and a further year of graduate study at PSU.

There is no age limit for applicants. Interested high school seniors should contact their school counselor. All others can visit an admissions office at any PCC campus to obtain an application form. For more information, visit the PCC Cascade Campus admissions office at 705 N. Killingsworth St.; call Julie Burke at 978-5282 or e-mail nbarnett@pcc.edu.
