PCC Debaters Look to Raffle for International Championship in Athens
Photos and story by Mark Evertz
Four Portland Community College students have qualified to participate in the 18th annual World Universities Debating Championships to be held Dec. 30 to Jan. 5 in Athens, Greece. But they need your help.
To raise the necessary funds to compete, the PCC debaters have organized a raffle. Tickets are $1 and can be purchased in unlimited quantities. Many businesses in the community have generously lined up some of their goods and services for these young scholars.
As of Sept. 26, the raffle has sold approximately 375 tickets. "Plane fare to Athens, Greece might be a tad more than $375 for five people," quipped Larry Galizio, director of the forensics team and a speech instructor of PCC’s Sylvania Campus.
The raffle drawing will take place during an evening of festivities at the downtown Greek Cusina restaurant, 404 S.W. Washington Street, on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 8 p.m. The evening is open to the public, and will be your last chance to buy raffle tickets. Winning ticket holders don’t have to be present to win.
PCC forensics team members Jil Freeman and Tomi Douglas of Northwest Portland, Jay Mobley of Tigard and Jerome Cole of Troutdale hope to attend the prestigious annual tournament, which hosts more than 500 competitors from over 40 countries.
The raffle’s grand prize is a weekend package for two to Reno, Nevada. Through the kind efforts of Bon Voyage Travel, the package includes round trip airfare for two plus two night’s hotel accommodations.
To purchase tickets before the Oct. 28 drawing, contact Larry Galizio at 977-4274. Checks are accepted and constitute a charitable donation. Send checks payable to "PCC Foundation-Forensics," to Larry Galizio, SY CT 202, P.O. Box 19000, Portland, Ore., 97280.
Other prizes include: A $100 travel voucher from Lea’s Travel, a gift basket from Trader Joe’s market, a gift certificate from each of Powell’s books, Bower’s Bakery, and The Hallmark Inn on the coast, a one-hour massage from a L.M.T., a handwoven quilt, Kawasaki merchandise, 18 holes of golf for four at Salishan Lodge, champagne brunch for two at Salishan Lodge and much more!
