PCC’s New Class Offers Integrated Approach to Fitness
Photos and story by Mark Evertz
Tired of pounding the floor with hard-edged aerobic exercise or using the “pump it up” approach to fitness? Portland Community College new class, Body in Balance, may be just what you’re looking for after the holidays. Body in Balance uses the method of body/mind conditioning based on exercises developed by Joseph Pilates, a German gymnast who was a pioneer in the fitness movement.
“Pilates approach has been known for years by dancers and various celebrities and athletes have used his method. But in the last several years, the approach is becoming more mainstream,” said instructor Diana LoVerso who teaches dance at PCC’s Sylvania Campus.
Instructor LoVerso says this method will lengthen and stretch muscles, develop core strength and stability and deepen breathing. It can also improve posture, balance and alignment, help integrate physical and mental focus, release tension and increase whole body awareness. The class meets Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the Sylvania Campus, 12000 S.W. 49th, beginning Jan. 5, from 1 to 1:50 p.m. in HT Building, Room 101. It is a one-credit course.
To inquire, please contact Diana LoVerso, on the faculty in the Physical Education and Dance department, at 977-4043.
