ROCK CREEK – More than 300 high school students from high schools throughout the Portland metro area are expected to get an education in the building and construction industry at Portland Community College’s Building Construction Career Day on Wednesday, April 22, at the Rock Creek Campus.
The Bureau of Labor and Industries, Associated General Contractors and a host of companies and associations tied to the construction trade will highlight their specialties at 17705 N.W. Springville Road from 8 a.m. to noon.
Representatives from industries such as construction, masonry, plumbing, heavy equipment manufacturing, architectural design and several other entities will be present to answer questions from and give information to high school students.
Dean Kruse, the division dean of science and technology at Rock Creek, said through promotional efforts to high schools in the region he expects this career day to equal or possibly surpass the recent Landscape Career Day, which brought nearly 300 students to Rock Creek.
Students will be able to tour the campus mall to check out exhibits, and listen to lectures on the construction industry, apprenticeship training and the Building Construction program at PCC. After the lectures, the eager builders-to-be have their choice of two special-interest sessions in their trade of choice, followed by a visit to a local construction site.
The message for students this career day? "If you are willing to work hard there are jobs out there for you," Kruse said. "Opportunities are everywhere."
