To show their appreciation for the hard work and dedication of selected faculty and staff members at Portland Community College, the PCC Foundation and U.S. Bank will be honoring 11 faculty and staff members in a ceremony at Atwater’s in the U.S. Bank Tower from 4 to 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 5.
This year’s ceremony marks the 10th year PCC and U.S. Bank have teamed up to honor staff and faculty achievement at Portland Community College.
PCC Foundation Director Jan Coulton said the generosity and vision of the decision-makers at U.S. Bank, and a wealth of extremely capable employees at PCC has kept the excellence award a part of annual tradition at PCC.
"This has been the best of both worlds for us here at PCC," she said. "We have been able to maintain an incredibly fruitful partnership with U.S. Bank, which in turn allows us to appropriately honor some of the best educators and educational staff in the state. We couldn’t be happier."
Each year, the college awards six full-time faculty members, three part-time faculty members, one educational/technical specialist and one classified (non-faculty) staff person. The full-time employees who win receive $1,000, while the part-time faculty winners receive $500.
This year’s winners are:
– Vicky Charlston of Northeast Portland, a full-time faculty member in computer applications/office systems at the Sylvania Campus.
– Susanne Christopher of Southeast Portland, staff development coordinator and Sylvania health instructor.
– Jerry Button of Southwest Portland, a full-time biology instructor at the Sylvania Campus.
– James Harrison of Northeast Portland, a full-time instructor of history and political science at the Cascade Campus.
– Spencer Hinkle of Southwest Portland, a full-time instructor in building construction technology at the Rock Creek Campus.
– Jane Holman of Lake Oswego, a full-time composition and literature instructor at the Sylvania Campus.
– Mark Andres of Southwest Portland, a part-time art instructor at the Rock Creek Campus.
– Chris Cayton of Tigard, a part-time philosophy instructor at the Sylvania Campus.
– Mary Holmstrom of Northeast Portland, a part-time humanities instructor at the Cascade Campus.
– Linda Shelton of Southeast Portland, a career information specialist at the Sylvania Campus.
– Bill Phillips of St. Johns Portland, a Learning Resource Center (LRC) technician at the Cascade Campus.
All award winners are nominated by staff and faculty at PCC. The PCC Foundation Board of Trustees then reviews the nominations to determine the winners. To be nominated the PCC employee must "consistently go the extra mile for students inside and/or outside the classroom."
Linda Wright, U.S. Bank’s vice president of community relations, recently lauded the efforts of PCC staff and faculty, and expressed pride in the PCC Foundation/U.S. Bank union over the last 10 years.
"U.S. Bank is proud of our long partnership with Portland Community College," she said. "We congratulate this year’s winners and commend them on their outstanding efforts and their commitment to their students."
Attending this year’s reception will be representatives from U.S. Bank, PCC President Daniel Moriarty, members of the PCC Board of Directors, PCC Foundation President Jill Eiland, family and friends of the award winners and others.
