Photos and story by James Hill
Come see the finest student craftsmen and craftswomen in the state of Oregon go head-to-head in the annual technical trade competition for the right to compete at the national VICA event in Missouri this June.
Witness some of the state of Oregon’s best with their hands as they put them on thrashed, broken or yet-to-be built items to give them life at the annual Vocational Industrial Clubs of America (VICA) competition. This year’s event will be held at the Oregon State Fairgrounds on Friday and Saturday, April 30 and May 1.
More than 20 Portland Community College students are expected to compete with high school and community college VICA students throughout the state of Oregon in a multitude of technical trade skills.
The SkillsUSA-VICA Oregon Championships and Career Fair will bring VICA students from Oregon together to show their mettle in skill sets such as carpentry, welding, diesel and auto collision repair, cabinet making and more. Winners in the state event win the right to compete in the national VICA competition in Kansas City, Mo., the last week of June.
Last year at the state competition held at Portland Community College, PCC students won first-place trophies in the carpentry, cabinetmaking, welding, and diesel skill sets. At nationals, PCC students placed second in carpentry and third in diesel.
In addition to battling it out for statewide and national recognition, students will have an opportunity to learn about career opportunities in their chosen fields at the event career fair during the weekend. Students can learn about everything from advertising design and welding to television production and job interview skills.
