Sculpture Students Learn the Art of the Arc

Photos and story by

Art students with designs on sculpting something that will live long into the next millennium are hard at work this summer in the for-credit Sculpture Welding II class at the PCC Rock Creek Campus.

Slated for Tuesdays and Thursdays through Sept. 2 in Rock Creek’s Building 2, from 5 p.m. to 9:50 p.m., Sculpture Welding II offers art students the opportunity to create welded sculpture and gain skills used by professional welders. Students are being schooled in oxyacetylene welding and cutting, SMAW (stick) welding, GMAW (wire) welding and TIG (gas tungsten) arc welding processes. The class itself covers metal sculpture design and construction, with several demonstrations, slides, lectures and films on the subject. Lectures are held in Room 132B and the welding portion of the class will be in Room 135.

Course instructor Cindy De Cecco, an art instructor who has taught sculpture and Intro to Art at PCC Cascade for the last three years, said combining the disciplines of sculpting and welding makes this class "the most exciting class to teach."

"Students were whooping and shouting at their successes," she noted recently after an oxyacetylene torch exercise. "It was amazing."
