Time Capsule Treasures Unveiled Oct. 2 at PCC Cascade

Photos and story by

The mechanical jaws of wrecking equipment chomped and tore at Portland Community College’s Cascade Hall last December until it was a pile of rocky debris.Health and safety reasons – mainly the building’s dry rot, asbestos, faulty wiring and the like – forced administrators to give the go-ahead to level the old building. It had served the community since 1946 at then-Cascade College, and then as a community center, music building and student meeting space at PCC.

Before there was time to lament about the razing of a campus monument, Cascade Hall left something behind for all of us to remember her by – a time capsule.

On Oct. 2, dignitaries from Portland Community College, alumni from the former Cascade College, community leaders and students will gather to see what’s inside at a time capsule opening ceremony in the PCC Cascade Gymnasium at 12:30 p.m.

Members of the Cascade College Alumni Association will join in the celebration at an alumni luncheon at 11:30 a.m. The PCC Cascade Campus is located at 705 N. Killingsworth St.

For more information on the event, call Cascade Executive Dean Mildred Ollee at 978-5302.
