Photos and story by James Hill
ROCK CREEK – As spring approaches, experience the rich fragrance and dazzling colors of flowery displays and majestic artistry of the Portland Home and Garden Show through the eyes of Portland Community College’s Building Construction Technology (BCT) students. They have constructed a display that will be one of 100 or so on hand at the Expo Center from Feb. 23-27. The PCC display will be open at the following times: on Feb. 23-24 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Feb. 25 from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Feb. 26 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Feb. 27 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Bob Steele, a Building Construction Technology instructor at the Rock Creek Campus, said the display has an eight-foot high cabinet with four columns that hold decorative nine-inch balls on the tops. On either side are poster boards with photographs of various jobs the department’s students have worked on. A total of 12 students, with a wide-range of ability and age, worked long hours to put together the display showing off the department and soliciting enrollment.
"We try to cater to as diverse a group as we can," Steele said. "Our major emphasis and the reason we worked hard on this was to show off the work of our talented students and to tell potential students and the community that there is a high-quality, viable building construction program at Rock Creek."
