'Vestidos' Exhibit a Haunting Look at Relationships
Photos and story by James Hill
They may be two different artistic disciplines, but the sculptures and paintings by A.J. Escobar and Leslie Nemour both explore the complexities of relationships through the common theme of wedding gowns in the art exhibit titled "Vestidos." The unique presentation of hauntingly empty gowns will go on display at the Portland Community College’s Northview Gallery on the Sylvania Campus Thursday, Feb. 17 and go through until March 17. There will be two lectures by the artists beginning with Nemour’s session at 11:15 a.m. on Feb. 17 in room 113 in the CT Building on the Sylvania Campus. Escobar will conduct a presentation on Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. in room 230 in the CT Building.
Through the same theme, Nemour’s paintings explore the complex workings and promises of relationships and their metaphors while Escobar’s work lies in sculpture, featuring costuming and its connections with female roles. Escobar is a Portland artist with a Master of Fine Arts degree in installation and performance from the University of California at San Diego. Nemour is an artist who hails from Oceanside, Calif., and she is the current chair of the Art department at MiraCosta College.
The Northview Gallery is located in room 214 of the CT Building, 12000 S.W. 49th, and is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. For more information on this exhibit or any of the events connected with it, contact gallery director Hugh Webb at 503-977-4264.
