Panthers to Start 2000-01 Basketball Season

PORTLAND – The 2000-2001 basketball season of the Portland Community College Panthers men’s and women’s teams are about to tip off. The PCC men’s team will begin its season on Friday, Nov. 24 at the Red Devil Classic Tournament at Lower Columbia Community College in Longview, Wash. The Panther women will open their season at home on Wednesday, Nov. 29 when they battle the Linfield College Wildcats’ junior varsity squad at 6 p.m. in the HT Building’s gymnasium on the Sylvania Campus, located at 12000 S.W. 49th Ave. The men will follow that game with an 8 p.m. contest versus the Linfield J.V. The PCC women’s team, coached by Ron Slovick, will have 11 freshmen and one sophomore on the roster. Forward Shawna Sipp (Franklin H.S./Portland) is the only sophomore on the team and will be joined by freshmen Josie Coppock (Nome Beltz H.S./Nome, Alaska), Jessia Andreas (Jesuit H.S./Portland), Lorissa Litvin (Lebanon H.S./Lebanon), Tiyonna Barnett (Jefferson H.S./Portland) and Michelle Roberts (Lathrop H.S./Fairbanks, Alaska). PCC guards include Meggan Sager (Canby H.S./Canby), Latasha Frison (Jefferson H.S./Portland), Yoland Cason (Jefferson H.S./Portland), Tara Middleton (Nestucca H.S./Tigard), Nisha Dizer (Benson H.S./Portland) and Melissa Rogers (Roosevelt H.S./Portland).The Panther men will have 14 freshman and one sophomore on this year’s roster. They include guards Demarcus Collins (Madison H.S./Portland), sophomore Chad Osburn (Cimarron Memorial H.S./ Las Vegas, Nev.) Rashard Johnson (Jefferson H.S./Portland), Chris Hutcherson (Jesuit H.S./Portland), Ben Kirk (Cleveland H.S./Portland), Victor Norris (Benson H.S./Portland), Samuel Johnson (Jefferson H.S./Portland), Brandon Hawthorne (Roosevelt H.S./Portland) Charles Wilson (Jefferson H.S./Portland) David Jackson (Mt. View H.S./Vancouver, Wash.) Chris Johal (Seaquam H.S./Vancouver, B.C.), Dele Farr (Rainier Beach H.S./Seattle, Wash.), Shelton Bennett (Wilson H.S./Portland), Trevor Klym (Sherwood H.S./Sherwood) and Justin McLaughlin (Rosalia H.S./Spokane, Wash.). "We have had an opportunity to bring in some kids that are generating some good chemistry and we have some pretty high expectations of being competitive," said men’s basketball head coach Donald Dixon. "The players are aiming pretty high and we definitely have a chance to make playoffs."PCC’s basketball teams play in the Southern Region of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges league.
