PCC Mural Dedication to Have Multicultural Appeal

Photos and story by

ROCK CREEK CAMPUS – Portland Community College will celebrate the artistic contributions of mural artist Hector H. Hernandez at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 29 at the Building 3 mall on the Rock Creek Campus, located at 17705 N.W. Springville Road. Student apprentices from the PCC campus who helped him paint a mural depicting the Hispanic and multicultural traditions of the campus will join the artist Hernandez. There will be music by Mariachi Jalisco and refreshments served at 1:30 p.m. followed by comments from Hernandez at 2 p.m. "I think it demonstrates one of the core values the college holds that we embrace the many cultures that make up our student population," said Mandy Ellertson, coordinator in the Student Activities program at Rock Creek. "An added benefit to this mural project was that the students were able to work with the artist on developing and painting the mural. It gives the students a sense of ownership." Hernandez also painted a large mural in Memorial Union at Oregon State University.Ellertson said about 25 students from PCC’s Oregon Leadership Institute (OLI) class worked on the project and helped raise funds to pay for the artist’s services. The OLI is a leadership program for high school Hispanic students who are mentored by PCC students. For more information, contact Mandy Ellertson at 503-614-7261.
