PCC Offers Three-Week Parenting Series

PORTLAND – A three-part, non-credit lecture series for parents titled Bringing Out the Best in Our Sons and Daughters will be offered this winter by Portland Community College.Sessions will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays, Jan. 24 through Feb. 7, at Wilson High School, 1151 S.W. Vermont St. The series focuses on the impact society is having on today’s youth. Each lecture explores a topic that is designed to help young people become strong, confident and compassionate toward others. Cost is $28 for the entire series or $15 for individual lectures.The series begins Jan. 24 with How to Advocate for Your Kids in School. Parents will learn proven strategies for making their voice heard in the school system. The lecture will examine how schools can often either limit or encourage children, and how parents can lobby in their child’s best interest.The series continues Jan. 31 with Raising Cain: Nurturing Boys Towards Kindness and Compassion. This session will focus on how boys grow up in a culture that encourages competition and aggressive behavior. The discussion will center on how parents can nurture the emotional well being of boys and strengthen their self-confidence.Reviving Ophelia: Raising Confident Girls in Today’s World concludes the series on Feb. 7. Parents will learn to understand the societal influences that undermine a girl’s self-confidence and what they can do to promote healthy self-concepts without imposing limitations.For more information, contact PCC Community Education at 503-731-6622.
