Photos and story by

PORTLAND – Portland Community College’s Engineering Technology and Math Division and Portland State University’s College of Engineering and Computer Science have been awarded a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to provide 40 low-income engineering and computer science students with two-year scholarships. The Computer Science, Engineering, and Mathematics Scholarships Program will assist those students at PSU and PCC studying engineering or computer science. The program will provide up to $3,125 per year for up to two years to full-time, low-income students in their first or second year of study. The scholarships will help students who otherwise might not enter the programs because of financial restraints, get the education they need.On Nov. 1, 2000, PCC and PSU, who enroll more college students than any other schools in the state, forged a new alliance to give students more choices and a clearer path to higher education through a co-enrollment agreement. It paves the way for joint admission and enrollment for both PSU’s and PCC’s current and prospective students and will allow students to be admitted to both schools with one application. Students will pay each school’s respective tuition rate. The new scholarship agreement took effect on Monday, Jan. 15 and the deadline to apply is Thursday, March 1. Applications are available through PSU’s financial aid department, or its Web site at: eas.pdx.edu/financialaid.shtml."This is a nice additional partnering to go on top of our dual enrollment program with Portland State,"said Scott Huff, division dean of PCC’s Engineering Technology and Math Division. "It is the next logical extension of that and we’re working together to get more students onto a four-year track. It was also a natural partnership in that almost half of all engineering students from PSU started their college careers at PCC."Students interested in applying for the awards can also contact Scott Huff at 503-977-4158, or Marcia Fischer, PSU’s director of Enrollment Service in its College of Engineering and Computer Science, at 503-725-4289.
