Photos and story by

PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Community College’s Sylvania Campus will be one of 200 campuses around the nation to honor V-Day 2001 College Initiative, which highlights the problem of violence against women. PCC will celebrate this campaign by hosting Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues play at noon on Friday, Feb. 16 in the Little Theater and at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17 in the performing arts center at Sylvania, located at 12000 S.W. 49th Ave.The Vagina Monologues dives into the mystery, humor, pain, power, wisdom, outrage and excitement buried in women’s experiences. Based on interviews with hundreds of women, from a Long Island antique dealer to a Bosnian refugee, the play brazenly explores questions often pondered, but seldom asked. V-Day 2001 College Initiative is a campaign to end sexual violence against women and to proclaim Valentine’s Day as the day to celebrate women and demand the end of abuse. Inspired by the world premiere at an off-Broadway theatre in New York City, the first V-Day was held in 1998 with performances by such stars as Glenn Close, Whoopi Goldberg, Susan Sarandon, Winona Ryder, Lily Tomlin and Calista Flockhart. More than 50 PCC faculty, staff, and students will be involved as actors and theater technicians for this production. The Sylvania Women’s Resource Center, In Other Words Women’s Bookstore, It’s My Pleasure Books & Gifts, Planned Parenthood of the Columbia/Willamette, and the Portland Mercury sponsor this event. Tickets are available for a suggested donation of $5 for students and $10 general admission. Tickets are available by contacting the Sylvania Campus Women’s Resource Center at 503-977-8101.
