Photos and story by James Hill
Dan Moriarty, president of Portland Community College, recently received an award from the PAVTEC education consortium for exemplary support of professional and technical education partnerships. PAVTEC is the coordinating group that links Portland Community College courses and faculty to high school students and teachers. Bill Manley, coordinator of PAVTEC, presented the award to Moriarty at the first annual forum and dinner on Feb. 27. Moriarty, who was the keynote speaker, received a standing ovation for the work he has done to support consortium efforts since the group’s inception in the late ’80s. Approximately 300 professional technical instructors from PCC and area high schools, along with school-to-work coordinators and administrators attended the event. Yvonne Katz, superintendent of the Beaverton School district, and Ron Dexter, associate superintendent of the Oregon Dept. of Education, were also featured speakers. Last year, PAVTEC coordinated articulation agreements with 40 local high schools and alternative sites in the PCC. The agreements resulted in college credits for 1,781 high school students. The students earned 12,463 college credits and saved $434,416 in college tuition in the process.Moriarty is a resident of Lake Oswego. He closes out his 15-year tenure as president of PCC in June.
