Don't Fudge On Marketing Your Food Product

Photos and story by

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Small Business Development Center at Portland Community College is sponsoring a three-hour workshop, Marketing Your Food Product, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 3 in room 204 of the Central Portland Workforce Training Center, located at 1626 S.E. Water Ave. If you have a great food product, this insightful workshop can help find unique and effective ways to market it. A panel of experts who have successfully marketed their products in grocery stores, specialty shops and mail order will discuss key strategies.

"We know that it doesn’t matter how good your fudge is or how unique your jam may be, that is not what will make your product a success in the market place,"said Marcia Pry, part-time instructor in the PCC Small Business Management Center. "There are business management issues, marketing issues, and financial and accounting issues, that have nothing to do with the deliciousness of the product or how much pleasure you get by making it. This class is meant to let people know just what is in store for them when they try to take their product to the marketplace.

Pry will be the facilitator of the workshop that will feature a panel that includes: Sid Anderson, creator of Masala Maza Indian sauces; Eric Davis, manager of Lamb’s Stroheckers in Southwest Portland and a former food broker; and Lynne Barra, Paradigm Foodworks in Lake Oswego. The cost is $35. People can register for the non-credit workshop by calling 503-978-5080.
