Fall Offerings Focus on Parenting and Safety Issues

SYLVANIA CAMPUS – A class on full-time parenting and a safety program for parents are being offered this fall at Portland Community College.Parenting as a Career will focus on what it means to parent full time and the importance of treating parenting with respect and dignity. Instructor Barbara Theus will discuss parenting from a career perspective, including long-term goal setting, managing resources, and developing leadership skills. She will also explore issues unique to parenting and help parents understand how their actions impact others, including their own children.Two six-week sessions of the non-credit Parenting as a Career class will be offered. The first session will meet from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 25 through Oct. 30, in HT 322 on PCC’s Sylvania Campus, 12000 S.W. 49th Ave. The second session will meet from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, Oct. 9 through Nov. 13, in SS 119 on the Sylvania Campus. Tuition for each class is $27.Parents can learn about and discuss safety issues during the Safe Families – Safe Kids Program, a discussion group slated to meet from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on two Wednesdays, Sept. 26 and Oct. 3, in CC Cedar on the Sylvania Campus. The sessions are targeted toward parents of 3rd through 8th graders, but are open to all parents. The format includes lectures and group discussions to provide parents with the tools necessary to manage discipline, freedom and safety issues involving their children. Instructor Mary Perlman will offer suggestions on establishing clear boundaries, using natural parenting instincts and maintaining family traditions.
