COLUMBIA COUNTY – Christine Paull was hired by Portland Community College as the new Women’s Resource Center and New Directions coordinator at the Rock Creek Campus. As New Directions program coordinator, she will help with displaced homemakers and take assessments on strengths of the students and focus on careers, educational plans, and determine the best course for them. Paull will help expand the program’s offerings in Columbia County.Paull, a former PCC student, earned her master’s degree from Portland State University and has worked with homeless families and special needs children for the last six years. She also has taught a night class for displaced homemakers and unemployed single parents at the PCC Cascade Campus for the past four years. "I have a commitment to working with women in transition,"Paull said. "I feel that PCC helped me make important changes in my life when I began taking classes at Sylvania. I feel that if I can make these changes in my life, then, with support, anyone can. I am glad to be part of that process."The hiring is part of PCC’s expansion of educational offerings for Columbia County in the 2001-02 school year. In addition to hiring Paull to coordinate special services, the college has three new classes for the fall term. They will be held at St. Helens High School (2375 Gable Road) and will include Math 20, Writing 90 and Reading 90. All are conveniently offered in the evening. Writing 90 will be held from 6:30 to 9:20 p.m. every Tuesday from Sept. 25 to Dec. 11 in room B48. Reading 90 will run from 6:30 to 9:20 p.m. every Thursday from Sept. 27 to Dec. 13 in room B46. Math 20 will be offered from 6:30 to 8:20 on Mondays and Wednesdays from Sept. 24 to Dec. 12 in room B46."One could take all three of these classes, which is a real advantage,"said Blaine Nisson, dean of student development at the Rock Creek Campus. "It’s one more effort on behalf of the college to connect with the community and meet its needs and meet the pledge to serve Columbia County the best way we know how."For registration information, call 503-977-4933, or for the TRAIL telephone registration system call 1-866-822-1010.
