PORTLAND, Ore. – A national council has voted John Sneed, Portland Community College’s director of distance education, its chair-elect for the Instructional Telecommunications Council’s executive board for the 2001-02 year. Sneed, who has been at PCC since 1995, will begin his two-year term in 2002. The 11-member ITC executive board elected Sneed, a resident of southwest Portland, via mail ballot."For me it’s an opportunity to have impact on a national level and to bring the PCC perspective to a national audience,"Sneed said. "It’s also an opportunity to learn from others from around the country, especially in the distance learning area which is changing so fast."ITC is a council that is part of the American Association of Community Colleges, and serves as a national leadership group that helps develop agenda and provide information on telecommunications for member colleges. While at Catonsville Community College in Baltimore, Md., Sneed was the northeast representative for the ITC executive board seven years ago. He spent 23 years as the director of media services and teleproductions, distance learning coordinator, media specialist and television producer while at Catonsville before coming to PCC.Sneed’s skills are varied, including helping to build a compressed video network, designing several telecourses, creating PCC’s online college, and building distance learning access centers to reach underserved residents in the Portland area.
