Ophthalmic Medical Technology Program Earns Accreditation Through 2008

Photos and story by

CASCADE CAMPUS – The Ophthalmic Medical Technology program at Portland Community College was awarded continuing accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. The PCC accreditation will go through 2008. The Ophthalmic Medical Technology program trains technicians who work directly with ophthalmologists – eye-care practitioners who treat diseases and perform surgery.Joanne Harris, director of the Ophthalmic Medical Technology program said, "The length of time we received was the maximum that is allowed. That, I think, is a reflection not only of the quality of the program, but also the quality of our institution. We have so many resources available for students here at the college and that makes our job easier to produce outstanding students. To have our work affirmed by an outside accreditation agency is a reflection of the staff."The recent peer review conducted by the commission’s board of directors recognized the program’s thorough compliance with nationally established standards. PCC’s Ophthalmic Medical Technology program’s last accreditation came in 1995.Ophthalmic Medical Technology is a two-year associate degree program and is part of the Medical Technology and Science Division at the Cascade Campus that includes Medical Laboratory Technology, Medical Assisting, Emergency Dispatch Operator 9-1-1, Alcohol and Drug Counseling and the Health Information Management program.
