Photos and story by

Portland, Ore. – Swirls and graceful lines have marked the writing of calligraphy masters for centuries; now Portland residents can sign their signatures with style in an upcoming non-credit calligraphy class. Students will use a variety of pens to learn the beautiful Italic alphabet, Roman capitals, foundational bookhand, Uncial, and Gothic styles. Instructor Colleen Cavin will also share the history of this ancient art, including a slide show. The nine-week course will take place on Tuesdays, beginning on Jan. 8 and running through March 5, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Grant High School, 2245 N.E. 36th Ave. Calligraphy is open to all levels. The cost is $91. For more information, contact PCC Community Education at 503-978-5143.
