PCC-Sylvania to Host 'Day of Dialogue' on Terror Issues

SYLVANIA CAMPUS – A group of Portland Community College faculty has put together an exciting and timely educational experience for staff, students and the public. The event is a daylong dialogue; "Beyond the Headlines: War, Peace, Terrorism, Security, Freedom"will go from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 15 in the Performing Arts Center on the Sylvania Campus, 12000 S.W. 49th Ave. It is free and open to the public.

PCC faculty and professors from local colleges and universities will take part in the "Day of Dialogue."The event is designed to give critical perspectives on what is happening in the world. All events are in the performing arts center unless otherwise noted.

"This ?Day of Dialogue’ will provide an exciting, timely educational experience for students, faculty, and staff from PCC, as well as the public,"said Sue Lynn, PCC history and economics instructor and event organizer. "A variety of speakers from around the Portland metro area will share their expertise and ideas, providing a critical look beyond the headlines of current international and national events in the aftermath of Sept. 11."

The schedule of sessions will include:

Violence, Slogans, and Flags: A Critical Perspective on Mass Media in the Post-Sept. 11 Environment – Hosted by Dave Mazza (Portland Alliance), Andy Simon (PCC philosophy instructor), Regina Lawrence (political science professor at Portland State University) and Larry Galizio (PCC speech instructor) from 9:30 to 10:50 a.m.

Who Benefits? The Few or the Many – Moderated by Barbara Dudley (Portland State University political science instructor) and Dean Darris (political science instructor at Clackamas Community College) from 11 a.m. to 12:20 p.m.

Religious Extremism: Who are the Faithful? – Spear-headed by Paul Powers (visiting professor of religion at Lewis and Clark College) and Steven Wasserstrom (professor of Judaic studies and humanities at Reed College) from 2 to 3:20 p.m.

Concerns of the American Muslim Community Since Sept. 11 – Led by the Global Studies: Islam class in Room 223 of the HT Building from 6 to 7 p.m.

U.S. Foreign Policy in the Middle East and Afghanistan: History, Current Issues, and Future Directions – Hosted by Zaher Wahab (professor of education at Lewis and Clark), Jon Mandaville (history and Middle Eastern studies professor at PSU) and Laurie Mercier (professor of history at Washington State University) from 7 to 9 p.m.

PCC faculty who organized the event include Larry Galizio (speech instructor), Tom Huminski (English instructor), Chris Cayton (philosophy instructor), Andrew Butz (sociology instructor), Amy Potter (resource specialist in Head Start program), Kim Saliba (sociology instructor), Deborah Evind (coordinator of the Sylvania Campus Women’s Resource Center), Claire Oliveros (Multicultural Center coordinator), Sara Gogol (creative writing/composition and literature instructor), Reza Kamali (division dean of Social Sciences), Michael Morrow (coordinator of child care services), Michael Sonnleitner (instructor in political science), Tim Flanagan (instructor), Steve Myers (history instructor), Rowan Wolf (sociology instructor), Cami Bishop (Sylvania Campus student leadership coordinator), and Larry Harrell.
