Media Advisory: Dental Department to host ?Sealant Day' at PCC-Sylvania

SYLVANIA CAMPUS – For the fifth consecutive year, students in the Portland Community College Dental Department will host the Dental Sealant Day on Friday, Feb. 15 as part of National Children’s Dental Health Month. Approximately 40 second graders from John Wetten Elementary School in the Gladstone School District and Greenway Elementary School in the Beaverton School District will receive oral hygiene education and have pit and fissure sealants applied to their teeth at no charge. John Wetten students arrive by school bus at 9 a.m., Greenway students at 12:30 p.m. The dental clinic is located at the PCC Sylvania Campus, Room 206 of the HT Building, 12000 S.W. 49th Ave.PCC dental hygiene students, as part of service learning activities in their Community Dentistry course, organized this year’s sealant day. Alumni from the dental hygiene program also come back to the campus to donate their services. Corporations donate the sealant materials with the assistance of the Multnomah County Dental Health Division.Dentists screen eligible children at the schools to determine the need for preventive dental services This event is only one of several service opportunities available to the dental hygiene program students. Second-year students also provide dental hygiene services to the Northwest Medical Teams mobile dental clinic, Clackamas County Dental Clinic, Virginia Garcia Dental Clinic, and teach oral health education in schools and long-term care facilities.
