PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Community College is one of the leading environmentally conscious schools in the country. The National Wildlife Federation spotlighted the college’s achievements in its "State of the Campus Environment: A National Report Card on Environmental Performance and Sustainability in Higher Education."The report noted PCC as doing more with energy efficiency and conservation, and for recycling 60 percent or more of their total generated municipal waste. Also, the report recognized the college for its land and grounds management programs. "We are pleased to have been recognized for our energy efficiency in those three areas,"said Steve Sivage, director of the PCC Physical Plant. "Specifically, we have applied procedures to improve heating, ventilation and air conditioning and modernized controls by installing energy efficient frequency motors and high-tech lights."Sivage also mentioned PCC’s recycling efforts have expanded every year and the college’s grounds crews receive continuous training by using environmentally sound landscape techniques and materials.Princeton Survey Research Associates helped conduct the survey. The findings are based on responses from 891 institutions of higher education in the U.S. College presidents, academic provosts, and chiefs of administration and operations responded to the survey. Questions covered a broad spectrum including issues of management, curriculum and operations. Nearly 22 percent of U.S. higher education institutions responded to the survey, the first of its kind.
