Photos and story by

PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Community College President Jesus "Jess"Carreon will be the featured speaker at the City Club Forum luncheon on Friday, March 15 in the Pavilion Room of the Hilton Hotel, 921 S.W. 6th. Carreon will speak on "Changing the Face of the Future: What our Demographics Teach Us."The program will be held from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. By the year 2020, some 40 percent of children sitting behind school desks will be students of color. Carreon will assert that it has become increasingly important to understand and honor the diversity of our communities. While demographic changes in Oregon may not be as dramatic as they have been in California or Texas, they are remarkable nonetheless. The 2000 U.S. Census highlights significant shifts in Oregon’s ethnic makeup – trends that will undoubtedly shape the way Oregon plans for the future. Carreon has been studying these demographic changes for the past decade. He will explain the implications of our growing ethnic populations, our aging baby boomers and other demographic groups. He will also discuss how Oregon’s diverse citizenry will likely shape the workplace and economy, education and health care.
