Photos and story by

PORTLAND, Ore. – Get ready for your first job as a security guard by enrolling in a Portland Community College course that prepares you to meet state standards. PCC will offer Oregon-mandated, unarmed security training in preparation for guard certification. Instructor Johnny Kai will present an overview of patrolling, report writing, communication, legal issues, emergency situations and more. This course is non-credit, yet students can earn certification upon completion. Successful students can then apply to the state, which requires a separate application, fingerprinting and background check fee. Security Training – State Certification will be offered twice this spring: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays, April 6 and 13 and Saturdays, May 4 and 11. Each class will meet at PCC’s Central Portland Workforce Training Center, 1626 S.E. Water Ave. Cost is $60. For more information, contact Community Education at 503-533-2707.
