Artists Reveal Sights Unseen at PCC Gallery
Photos and story by James Hill
SYLVANIA CAMPUS – Columbia Gorge photographers Terry Toedtemeier and Fritz Liedtke will be featured artists at Portland Community College’s North View Gallery. The exhibit, "Sightseers and Sites Unseen: Photographs of the Columbia Gorge,"will be on display through Dec. 14 at the gallery on the Sylvania Campus, 12000 S.W. 49th Ave. The North View Gallery is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. every weekday. A reception with the artists will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 21 at the Little Theater in the CT Building.Toedtemeier says his photos are about the geology of the Gorge, how the natural processes work and how they can be visualized. "Many photographs work off the beauty of light and form to jerk chords in us that kindle an affection for the land and nature,"he said. "A lot of the photos are of sights that most folks don’t get to or know exist."Liedtke likes the detail of space and frowns on the lack of attention some photographers give to their surroundings. He started with taking photographs of a park by his home and expanded to the Gorge and Mount Saint Helens. "I found that some people do come and pay attention,"he said. "I found that those who see, stay. And many of the most intriguing images are those who are able to be still in the midst of the tourist hubbub."For more information on this exhibition, contact gallery curator Marie Watt at 503-977-8017.
