PORTLAND, Ore. – Topping the list of New Year’s resolutions each year is self-improvement. Now you can read one new book each week, keep abreast of current events, and manage never-ending cascades of emails with an online class in expert speed reading, presented by Portland Community College. Merrill Ream Speed Reading is taught by nationally renowned expert, Dr. Merrill Ream, who has taught speed-reading techniques to thousands of students in high schools, adult schools, colleges, universities, and the U.S. Navy. Dr. Ream’s published works include a university textbook entitled The Merrill Ream 10-Lesson Speed Read Course. He is the assistant editor of "Action Era Vehicle"magazine, and also served as associate director of the Center for Economic Education at San Diego State University. In this interactive non-credit course, students will learn 16 good reading practices; begin to overcome poor reading habits; learn about, choose and develop a speed-reading style that works; and assess personal progress. The online format makes it easy for students to work at their own pace, on their own time, from home computers. Students can register by visiting www.ourcoursescome2u.com. The course will be held three times this winter: Wednesday, Jan. 15 through Friday, Feb. 21; Wednesday, Feb. 12 through Friday, March 21; and Wednesday, March 12 through Friday, April 18. Students can open the lessons anytime for the duration of the course. Cost is $79. For more information, contact PCC Community Education at 503-731-6619.
