MEDIA ADVISORY: PCC-Sylvania Celebrates Japanese New Year

SYLVANIA CAMPUS – The Japanese New Year is coming to Portland Community College.On Sunday, Feb. 2, the Sylvania Campus Multicultural Center is co-sponsoring Mochitsuki 2003, the Japanese New Year’s celebration. There will be Taiko (Japanese drums), dance performances, storytelling and "mochitsuki,"which is the process of pounding steamed rice into a glutinous mass.The shows will be from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center at Sylvania, 12000 S.W. 49th Ave. Events include Robert Kikuchi-Yngojo of Eth Noh Tec who will engage the audience in storytelling, the Japanese dance of Fujinami-Kai, Sahomi Tachibana, Moshi Moshi skits for kids and much more. There also will be a Kimono exhibit as well as interactive workshops that include Taiko, Japanese calligraphy, flower arrangement and Kokeshi doll pencils.Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for students and $3 for children. Tickets for Mochitsuki 2003 can be purchased by calling 503-224-TIXX, or at the door of the Performing Arts Center. Parking is free and the campus is on the routes of Tri-Met buses 44 and 78. Portland Taiko, Oregon Nikkei Legacy Center and Japanese American Citizens League as well as PCC sponsor the event.
